The General Epistles of Peter

I Peter 1:22

KJV - Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: (Byz)

NASV - Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, (Aleph,A,B)


I Peter 1:23

KJV - Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. (Byz)

NASV - for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. (Aleph, B - probable)


I Peter 2:2

KJV - As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby: (Byz)

NASV - like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, (Aleph, B - probable)


I Peter 2:21

KJV - For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: ( Byz reads “suffered for us, leaving you an example”. The KJV rendering comes from minor manuscripts. )

NASV - For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, (Aleph,A,B)


I Peter 3:13

KJV - And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? (Byz)

NASV - Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? (Aleph, B - probable)


I Peter 3:15

KJV - But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: (Byz)

NASV - but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; (Aleph,A,B)


I Peter 3:16

KJV - Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers , they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. (Aleph,A,Byz)

NASV - and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. (B)


I Peter 3:18

KJV - For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: (B,Byz)

NASV - For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; (no major manuscripts)

Note: If the KJV followed ALEPH, it may read something like this: "For Christ also hath once [with regards to] our sins died [to atone for] us, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:".


I Peter 4:1

KJV - Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; ( Aleph, A, Byz )

NASV - Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (B)


I Peter 4:14

KJV - If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified . (Byz)

NASV - If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. ( Aleph, B )


I Peter 4:16

KJV - Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. (Byz)

NASV - but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. (Aleph, B - probable)


I Peter 4:19

KJV - Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. (Byz)

NASV - Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. (Aleph, B - probable)


I Peter 5:2

KJV - Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; ( Byz, B )

NASV - shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; ( Aleph, A )


I Peter 5:5a

KJV - Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. (Byz)

NASV - You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. (Aleph, B - probable)


I Peter 5:10

KJV - But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. (us - no major manuscripts / Christ Jesus – A, Byz )

NASV - After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. (you – Aleph, A, B, Byz / Christ - Aleph, B )


I Peter 5:14b

KJV - Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen. ( Aleph, Byz )

NASV - Peace be to you all who are in Christ. ( A, B )


II Peter 1:12

KJV - Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. (Byz)

NASV - Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. (Aleph, B - probable)


II Peter 1:21

KJV - For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.  ( Aleph, Byz )

NASV - for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.  (B)


II Peter 2:13

KJV - And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; ( A, Byz )

NASV - suffering wrong as the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, as they carouse with you, (Aleph, B)


II Peter 2:17

KJV - These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever (Byz)

NASV - These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved. (Aleph, B - probable)


II Peter 2:18

KJV - For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. (Byz)

NASV - For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, (Aleph, A, B)


II Peter 3:3

KJV - Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, (Byz)

NASV - Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking , following after their own lusts, (Aleph, B - probable)


II Peter 3:9

KJV - The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (Byz)

NASV - The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (B)


II Peter 3:10

KJV - But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (Byz)

NASV - But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. (Aleph, B - probable)


II Peter 3:10

NASV - Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, (B)
